About Us

Soulful Chile

The recipes you’ll find here are inspired by family kitchens, shared plates, and the belief that food holds memory. They are dishes meant to comfort you after a long day, remind you of someone you love, or help you create new traditions of your own. Every recipe carries a sense of place: honoring African American roots, a New Mexican upbringing, and the cultural overlap that happens when families grow, blend, migrate, and evolve. We believe food doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. It just needs heart!

Our Story

Food has always been more than something to eat in our family. It’s how we connect, how we remember, and how we care for one another.

Javonne Lane was raised in New Mexico, a place where the scent of roasting chiles means celebration, comfort, and home. She has been cooking with her mom since she was four years old as a “little sous chef” and learned family recipes while exploring new recipes and flavors.

As an African American family rooted in New Mexico since the 1950s, our table was shaped by more than one tradition. Soul food and New Mexican flavors didn’t just coexist — they blended naturally. Red and green chile found their way into dishes passed down through generations. Then moving to Utah opened more doors to local growers, farmers markets, and farm-to-table restaurants and food trucks. Meals were a reflection of who we are and where we come from. This space was created to share those stories through food.

Our Mission

To connect with people through recipes that feel familiar, nourishing, and soulful.

To share food that brings comfort and sparks memories, whether it’s a weeknight dinner or a holiday gathering.

To celebrate blended cultures, especially honoring both African American and New Mexican culinary traditions.

But our mission goes beyond the kitchen. We believe everyone deserves access to food. No one should wonder where their next meal is coming from. That’s why a part of what we do supports local food banks and community food programs. Because feeding people is an act of dignity and connection.

Supporting Local Communities

Community matters to us. We are committed to supporting local businesses, farmers, brewers, wineries, and artisans in Utah and New Mexico. These are the places that sustain real people… families, small business owners, and neighborhoods with deep roots.

By highlighting local resources and sourcing thoughtfully when possible, we aim to bring visibility and livelihood to the communities that have shaped us. When you support this space, you’re supporting more than recipes — you’re helping keep local stories, flavors, and businesses alive.

Why We Do This

At its heart, this space is about people. It’s about sitting down together and creating a welcoming space where sharing good food is the key ingredient. It’s about honoring where we’ve been while making room for where we’re going.

Food is the bridge between cultures, generations, and communities. We are honored to share that bridge with you. Welcome to our table!
